5 TIPS TO HIRE A GOOD TILE INSTALLER

When it comes to tiles installation works for your home, many aspects like time-frame or dateline, designs complication, budget and technique of fixing have to be decided first. Decisions, like hacking the old tiles and fixing anew or fixing tiles-on-tiles and its detailing, have to be given due consideration to avoid mistakes and precious time wasted in the future.

Therefore, it is imperative if we can hire a good and professional tile installer to assist us from inception till we can get the desired design that we plan for minus the faulty workmanships.

Here are 5 tips that we can pay attention to in getting us a high-quality tile installer

1)  Ask For Good Recommendation From Seasoned Players

Whenever we are shopping for tiles, ask for recommendations from the tile shops or retailers if there have a team of installers or not. If not, can they introduce credible installers to you? Make an effort to have a few options of installers to check for comparison. We can also do some background checks with them on how many years of experience the tile installer has or are there any complaints dealing with the installer or are they able to complete their work on time?

If we have direct contact with commercial contractors, architects, designers, or tiles salespersons, it will be an added advantage as they can also recommend us to qualified installers whom they know, trust and have experience working directly with.

2) Look For Someone With Experience

Often, we will hire any handyman or anyone that claimed the ability to do general construction works i.e. Jack-of-all-trades because we are recommended to them by our best friend’s uncle or your brother’s best friend and so on. Whatever the situation, we will need to hire someone with at least 3 years of tiles installation experience and a proven track record for the type of installation method. In other words, how much is their knowledge in using the correct installation method? As an example, you can ask them do they use adhesive for installing porcelain tiles or not? What sort of brands do they usually use? What types of adhesive they are using (C1 or C2 type of adhesive)? How they will protect the tile surface upon completion of their installation while waiting for other components of the building materials to be installed?

Upon hiring a skillful and professional tile installer from start will definitely be able to save time, money and frustration in return for a job well done.

3) Ask All The Important Questions

Besides the above question, we can ask these pertinent questions to the installer prior to our further association with them:

  • What is the rate for installation work only, quoted based on either per lump sum basis or ft2 basis (depending on the scale of the project)?
  • How long is the duration to complete the job?
  • How many tiles are needed which include a certain % of wastages?
  • How many workers will be employed to get the job done?
  • What sort of projects they have completed thus far? Pay attention to the size of projects they have completed. If they have completed bungalows, for example, on time, then the chances of quality work will be higher compared to those that have not done so before as they need skills to perform large format tiles or sophisticated design for such projects.

4) Ask For Pictures Of Completed Projects And View Thoroughly

Do get pictures of those past and completed projects from your would-be tile installer to be scrutinized. Look at it closely for any mediocre or shabby works, if any. Pointers to look out for will be the following:

  • Tiles with consistent or even spacing/grouting will have perfect straight joints/lines.
  • Tiles that are skillfully laid onto the floor will not have any lippage issues.
  • Look at the overall layout for a balanced distribution of tiles with cut tiles of even sizes to be at the opposite end of the room or area.
  • Observe their skills set for work done especially on the detailing around the windows, doors, corners or floor trap. If there are large gaps or too much grout or jagged-cut edges or hairline cracks, then these will indicate the tile installer’s skill level which is not up to par.

5) Have It In Written Form

Once you have done all the researches and are ready to appoint your tile installer, please ensure to request an official quotation which spelled out the details of work, your costs, estimated timeline to complete, their work will be free from poor workmanship, a guarantee to make good any defects for a duration of 6 months to a year and so forth. This is to show your installer that you are serious about a job well done and that you are in favor of good quality workmanship.

A good tile installer will never be afraid to commit to the terms and conditions as they are confident with their installation work which will go a long way into their businesses.

In the limelight, professionalism is the hallmark of any excellent business. When we hire a tile installer, they will need to be professional throughout the project till completion which is timely handing over the home to you. Even the way they present themselves, speak or interact with you plays a part in determining your choice in appointing a good tile installer. Good tile installers will last very long in the market and their business may be in high demand. As such, there is a tendency for them to charge a higher premium or need to wait for a longer period to accept your offer. No matter what, in this case here it may be a worthwhile wait after all.
